COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Voluntary Action Center will launch its annual Back to School Program on July 21, distributing 800 backpacks filled with school supplies to qualifying Boone County families until Aug. 29—families with children from kindergarten through 12th grade can call 573-874-2273 or visit the VAC office at 403A Vandiver Drive to check eligibility.  KOMU 8

CRIME NEWS

  • In Boone County's McBaine area, a man riding his motorcycle was hit Monday by Donald Legleiter (36) who reportedly reversed his vehicle to strike him a second time before fleeing; deputies later found the abandoned car in a bean field and Legleiter faced charges of first-degree assault, armed criminal action, and leaving the scene of an accident causing physical injury with an initial court appearance set for Tuesday.  KOMU 8
  • A Columbia man was charged with assault after purposefully hitting a motorcyclist with his SUV on July 14 at 5:32 p.m. in the 6400 block of S. Allen Street — witnesses said the rider suffered severe head and torso injuries and that the driver left the scene before prosecutors charged him with First Degree Assault, Armed Criminal Action and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.  KRCG
  • On Sunday at Stephens Lake Park, Columbia police responded when 45-year-old Jesse Howe allegedly chased joggers with a knife and injured an officer who was taken to the emergency room—Howe faces charges of first-degree assault, misdemeanor peace disturbance and felony resisting arrest and is held at Boone County Jail without bond.  ABC 17
  • A 36-year-old man was charged on Monday with first-degree assault, armed criminal action + leaving the scene after he allegedly hit a motorcyclist with his SUV on Allen Street near McBaine at about 5:30 p.m., causing serious injuries and abandoning his vehicle.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Columbia’s Solid Waste utility began collecting select recyclables in blue bags on July 15 — only aluminum beverage cans, metal food cans, plastic bottles and plastic containers — while glass and other plastics continue to be sent to the landfill.  KRCG
  • Columbia's Solid Waste Utility has partnered with Federal Recycling + Waste Solutions in Jefferson City to start transporting plastic bottles, detergent containers, and metal cans in blue recycling bags effective immediately, while residents are asked not to include glass and low-value plastics. The new rules come after an EF1 tornado destroyed the city's Material Recovery Facility on April 20 and city officials now seek resident feedback on plans for a new facility.  KOMU 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • Boone Health opened its new Breast Care clinic in Columbia Tuesday to provide extra space for breast cancer screenings, diagnostics, surgeries, and mastectomies — the facility is across from the hospital and open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Boone Health also announced that a bra and prosthetic shop will open by early 2026 to further support patient care.  KRCG
