On Saturday afternoon, Boone County firefighters rescued a stranded fawn from a lake near the 3400 block of West Route K (with help from Lieutenant Workman) after fishermen spotted it struggling, and reunited the fawn with its mother before both returned to the woods.

Today, the school board will review proposed bullying policy changes that expand reporting duties to include substitutes, contractors, and volunteers and require reports within two school days at the Aslin Administration Building (policy discussions began in April).

Missouri Wing Civil Air Patrol invites local educators and youth leaders to join its Aerospace Education Member program, which supplies free STEM resources and flight orientation opportunities on CAP aircraft.

The program costs $35 for the first year and welcomes teachers and homeschool coordinators working with K–12 students.

Sixteen recruits have joined Boone County Fire Protection District's 2026-2 Recruit Academy to train as firefighters and EMTs; training runs for five months with graduation scheduled in November and applications open for the next session.

Columbia Public Schools board member Jeanne Snodgrass resigned effective today to accept a new job that requires moving outside the district— the board will soon appoint a replacement to serve until her term ends in April as interested candidates have two weeks to apply.

Gov. Mike Kehoe signed bills letting schools hire armed Missouri Rangers for security — and establishing a state athletic commission to review high school eligibility decisions.

School districts decide how to use the program, and the commission will start hearing appeals in the 2027-28 school year.

Missouri Task Force One team members are returning to Boone County today after almost completing a flood response in southeast Missouri, having searched over 100 damaged structures + 90 damaged campers and 120 vehicles in Reynolds and Iron counties.
