ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A Columbia man was hospitalized with moderate injuries after he was ejected from his Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. when he veered off Route E east of Bethlehem Road in Boone County (he was wearing a helmet and was taken to University Hospital). KRCG
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A jury trial began Wednesday in Boone County for former MLB player Blake Tekotte—accused of domestic assault and kidnapping—after his ex-girlfriend testified about alleged abuse in November. KOMU 8
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe signed a bill on Wednesday that bans cellphones during the school day and adjusts calendar rules so that districts can get extra state funding if they have fewer school days; the law takes effect in the 2025-26 school year and lets schools allow exceptions for health or learning needs—districts will set their own discipline rules. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Columbia City Council is holding work sessions next week at city hall to review the fiscal year 2026 budget, starting on July 14 and including meetings on July 16 and July 19. Town hall meetings and public hearings in August and September will let residents offer input before the final budget vote on Sept. 15 — ensuring the community's views are heard in the planning process. - ➤ Beginning immediately, passengers at Columbia Regional Airport now keep their shoes on during TSA screening—travelers without REAL ID may be subject to additional checks as officials say advanced technology is speeding up security lines. Columbia Daily Tribune
- ➤ Gov. Mike Kehoe signed Senate Bill 160 on Wednesday, which includes Danny’s Law — an anti-hazing law named after Danny Santulli who suffered severe brain damage — that gives limited immunity if someone gets help immediately and stays with a hazing victim while emergency personnel arrive while making hazing a criminal offense for those who endanger students. - ➤ At a forum hosted by Race Matters Friends, Ward 2 city council candidates Vera Elwood and Ken Rice discussed DEI initiatives, government transparency and plans to boost the public bus system ahead of the special election on Aug. 5. Elwood supported keeping the DEI language in Columbia’s plan while Rice said the measure was largely symbolic—each candidate aims to serve the community effectively. KOMU 8
- ➤ The Columbia Police Department is increasing speed enforcement along Scott Boulevard today after catching drivers near 100 mph—aiming to reduce high-risk driving. A CPD spokesperson said local measurements showed speeds of 40—67 mph and residents voiced concerns over inconsistent speed limits. ABC 17

- ➤ MU Health Care Children's Hospital marked its one-year milestone with an event where firefighters dressed as superheroes rappelled down the building, serving cake and shaved ice for kids. The hospital will finish a new third floor in 2027 that adds seven operating rooms — including two with real-time MRI imaging — along with flexible pre-operative and recovery spaces to meet growing surgical demand.
