- ➤ At Agriculture Park, third graders and volunteers worked in raised garden beds as CCUA connects people to food and farming through hands-on programs and partnerships with local groups—construction of a new welcome center with a resource library, meeting spaces, and a kitchen began last month and is expected to finish within a year. - ➤ A Columbia man, Brandon Michael Butchkoski, 47, was charged with First Degree Arson and Possession of a Controlled Substance after police arrested him on July 3 for a June 29 fire on Paris Road—he is held without bond in Boone County Jail. KRCG
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Firestone Baars Chapel at Stephens College has long been a welcoming space where visitors enjoy vivid stained glass and natural wood details, built by architect Eero Saarinen. The chapel remains a popular site for weddings and memorials and continues to serve students and locals — uniting the campus with its timeless design. COMO Magazine
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Eight students from Columbia Area Career Center earned certificates at the 2025 SkillsUSA Championships in Atlanta, where more than 6,500 students competed (in events such as robotics, auto tech, and culinary arts). Two students medaled (one with gold and one with bronze) and all certificates show they are ready for work. Columbia Daily Tribune
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ An interested parties meeting — aimed at reviewing plans for a new sidewalk and grass parkway between Maplewood Drive and West Boulevard — will take place on July 14 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Activity and Recreational Center at 1701 W. Ash St., with construction planned for spring if approved. ABC 17
- ➤ The Columbia Public Works Department has proposed a new sidewalk along the south side of West Broadway between Maplewood Drive and West Boulevard that features a 5-foot-wide concrete path and a 3-foot-wide grass parkway. The department will hold an open-house meeting on July 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Activity and Recreational Center (ARC, 1701 W. Ash St.) (if approved, construction will begin in spring 2027). KOMU 8
- ➤ At Monday's city council meeting, the Central Missouri Humane Society asked Columbia for $5.5 million to build a new shelter because their current facility is overcrowded and unsafe. The group has raised $5 million, bought a 17.5-acre site, and received a donor offer to match contributions up to $2.5 million—hoping to move the project forward. KOMU 8
