COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbia’s 73rd annual Fire in the Sky festival will begin tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at Stephens Lake Park with live music, kids’ activities and food trucks, and the free event offers ADA-accessible parking along with shuttle services from city parking garages. The fireworks display will start at 9:15 p.m. set to music on KBXR 102.3 — making it a festive start to the evening.  Inside Columbia

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday night a driver from Clifton Hill fell asleep while driving on Missouri 22 west of Mexico causing his vehicle to cross the center line and strike another car that left an 8 year old boy and a 34 year old man seriously injured, a 30 year old woman and a 9 year old girl with minor injuries, and a tire that hit a third vehicle with no injuries — according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol — in Audrain County.  KOMU 8
  • A 34-year-old man from Clifton Hill fell asleep while driving west on MO-22 near Thompson on July 2—causing his Dodge Charger to cross the center line and hit a Ford Escape, which lost a tire and struck another car, leaving a 30-year-old driver and a 9-year-old with minor injuries and an 8-year-old and the man with serious injuries as all were taken to University Hospital.  KRCG

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities arrested Allen Hauck, 29, on charges of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Armed Criminal Action after he allegedly followed people with a small axe at fast food restaurants just after midnight on July 3 — witnesses said he threatened a bystander.  KRCG
  • A Columbia man was charged with drug trafficking after Boone County deputies found methamphetamine (10.5 grams) and fentanyl (1.5 grams) during a search at a residence on James Dale Road on July 3rd. Prosecutors charged Keyon Midgyett with Second Degree Trafficking Drugs and Possession of a Controlled Substance.  KRCG

CULTURE NEWS

  • An adult-only improv comedy show titled Live Free, Eat Trash will take place Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at Talking Horse Productions (210 Saint James St., suite B) and promises irreverent humor based on freedom and chaos.  Inside Columbia

  • Brad Pitt said he attended a Mizzou graduation ceremony + left two credits incomplete so he did not earn his degree.  Columbia Missourian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • AAA predicted that 1.2 million Missouri travelers would take trips of 50 miles or more over the Fourth of July weekend based on economic data and past trends. Highway Patrol Sergeant Kyle Green said traffic was heaviest on Thursday — and he expects a peak on Sunday while urging everyone to drive safely.  KOMU 8
