CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Columbia police arrested 21-year-old Noah A. Cooley on Tuesday for an armed robbery reported on June 5 in the 100 block of Business Loop 70—he was later found on the 1000 block of Claudell Lane. KRCG
- ➤ Kimo Spivey’s trial continued as the medical examiner showed autopsy photos and Detective Joel Mueller presented shooting video evidence from the 2023 Plush Lounge shooting—Spivey testified he feared for his life while an eyewitness recalled being close enough to feel sparks from the gunfire. - ➤ Jordan Shelton, 42, of Mexico, Mo., pleaded guilty in January and was sentenced to more than 13 years in federal prison for conspiring to distribute fentanyl—authorities said a search in August 2022 found 47 fentanyl pills and additional powder at his home. KRCG
- ➤ James Edward Hughes, 30, of Columbia, was sentenced to 127 months in prison after pleading guilty in February to trafficking 815 fentanyl pills and illegally carrying a firearm; police found the drugs and gun during a September stop of his silver Mazda SUV+ the conviction covers charges for both drug distribution+ firearm possession. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Missouri lawmakers may hold a special session in the fall to review a property tax cap that limits most counties to a 5% rise or the rate of inflation. Speaker Jon Patterson formed an interim committee to study the tax system and plan seven hearings this summer (to gather public input) (and address rising tax pressures). Columbia Daily Tribune
- ➤ Boone County’s Community Services Department said that every $1 spent on youth programs returned about $9.51 in benefits for local programs from 2019 to 2023 while child poverty and teen births dropped. The 2024 report also showed rising mental health hospitalizations and teen deaths and called for expanded school-based mental health support—an urgent step to address these challenges. ABC 17
- ➤ Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services is partnering with University of Missouri Extension to hold focus groups throughout July to gather local opinions on food access & agriculture. Participants will receive a complimentary meal and a $20 gift card for sharing their experiences. KOMU 8
- ➤ Traffic on U.S. 63 between Broadway and Vandiver Dr. was reduced to one lane in both directions starting Wednesday as crews prepared for rehabilitation on the northbound bridge over I-70. Northbound drivers had to remain in the left lane while exit ramps stayed open as part of MoDOT’s first phase to improve the I-70/US 63 interchange—affecting local traffic flow. ABC 17
- ➤ Columbia’s Clerk Office is accepting applications for over 13 board and commission positions until 5 p.m. Monday, July 7, on the city website—residents can view descriptions and eligibility requirements online. KOMU 8
