CRIME NEWS

  • Columbia police have revealed new details in the unsolved June 6th murder of Virginia 'Ginger' Davis when a neighbor’s call led officers to her locked home at 1508 Patsy Lane, where she was found in only underwear with a plastic bag over her head—evidence such as holes cut in a window screen and her purse left inside has prompted a team of 12 investigators to review the case—while the weapon behind her head injury remains unidentified.  ABC 17
  • On Tuesday, Kimo Spivey's trial for charges related to the 2023 Plush Lounge shooting advanced with evidence and eyewitness testimony from Columbia Police officers, a deputy, a trooper and other officials. Plush Lounge security guard Steven Wayne Grimes recounted the night’s events—describing an altercation that led to a gunfight—while the trial is set to continue for three more days.  KOMU 8
  • A Marshall man, John Hooper, was charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action, illegal weapon possession, drug possession and unlawful use of a weapon after police found him with multiple firearms (including shotguns), homemade explosive and incendiary devices and meth residue in a shopping cart in Saline County on Tuesday; he is held in jail without bond and has a hearing set for 10:30 a.m. today.  ABC 17
  • A federal judge in Jefferson City sentenced 42-year-old Jordan Shelton from Mexico to over 13 years in prison—he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl after police in Mexico and Columbia found fentanyl powder and capsules during a search of his home last August and he must serve four years of supervised release without parole.  KOMU 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Leaders at Columbia Public Schools looked at over $90,000 in unpaid lunch bills at Tuesday’s Finance Committee meeting and plan to change the rules for the Lunch for Learners fund, which now has more than $75,000 in donations - a program for families in temporary need.  ABC 17
  • At its Tuesday evening meeting, the Columbia Public Schools Finance Committee discussed the $91,283.36 in unpaid school lunch debt from 1,673 student accounts—of which 247 are from students receiving free or reduced meals—as it reviewed parameters for the Lunch for Learners donation account funds.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting the week after July 4, Columbia will simplify downtown parking meters by reducing seven time options to four to ease driver confusion. The new color-coded meters — offering 15-minute, 1-hour, 3-hour and 10-hour limits across 1,166 spots — are expected to be fully installed by the start of classes at the University of Missouri.  KOMU 8

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Since December 29, 2015, Todd Narrol has biked every day and reached 3,417 consecutive riding days—he averages about 33.4 miles per day while facing harsh weather and overcoming injuries. He often rides in the early morning and uses work breaks to log extra miles, keeping a detailed record of his streak.  COMO Magazine
