COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ At Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center, volunteer support dropped when many college students left for summer, leaving 45 volunteers when 70 were needed to run horse-assisted therapy sessions for children and adults with disabilities. The center held a training session on June 23 (5 to 7 p.m.) and will start the summer session on June 25. KOMU 8
- ➤ True North of Columbia will open its first Advocacy Center on June 26 with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. and an open house to show its 24/7 shelter, crisis response, legal advocacy, education, and prevention services (funded by Veterans United Foundation). KOMU 8
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A jury trial began at 8 a.m. Monday for Kimo Spivey, 35, of Columbia, who is charged with the death of Melvin Hooker III in the 2023 Plush Lounge shooting — he faces charges including first-degree murder, illegal gun possession, and armed criminal action while being held at Boone County Jail with no bond. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Columbia Utilities is asking residents for input on a new recycling facility through a survey on the BeHeard website—recycling has been paused since the old facility was destroyed by a tornado on Easter Sunday—and demolition, which began in May, is expected to be completed by the end of June. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Columbia Public Works crews are fixing a road buckle on North Providence Road north of Big Bear Boulevard after rising temperatures caused the damage on Monday, and they will finish repairs by the end of today—drivers are advised to take alternate routes such as Garth or Highway 63 until the work is complete.
