- ➤ On Thursday, Columbia hosted several Juneteenth celebrations that honored Black entrepreneurship at Urban Empowerment Ministries where the Columbia African American Business Alliance offered live food+music and a vendor fair. Community leaders Reverend James Gray and Donna Nobel Cavitte explained local history and economic struggles by highlighting legacies like Louis M. Noble, the Shops at Sharp, and the Noble Court trail marker initiative. KRCG
- ➤ Yesterday, the Central Missouri Humane Society in Columbia said it faced a kennel shortage that forced it to consider euthanizing dogs for the first time in over 10 years. The no-kill shelter (95% live release rate) urged adoptions and closed at 6 p.m. as it worked to move dogs to available spaces. ABC 17
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Attorney Michael Berry asked Cole County Judge Cotton Walker on Friday to add at least $1.3 million+ to the $43.8 million judgment awarded in a lawsuit involving Ryan Ferguson and six former Columbia police detectives over a wrongful conviction. Berry said the judge did not include 129 days of interest through June 16+ and he plans to challenge the cap on punitive damages. ABC 17
- ➤ City officials announced an air conditioner trade-in program to help residents deal with rising summer heat—eligible residents can exchange old units for energy-efficient models. The program will roll out soon to keep homes cool. Columbia Missourian
- ➤ Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe attended the 93rd Annual Meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors in Florida where nearly 200 city leaders met to discuss public safety, housing and climate change. She said the taxpayer-funded trip was valuable for advocacy while critics questioned its transparency—she joined only Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas as the sole Missouri representative. KRCG
