COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbia restaurant workers are raising funds to send beloved Gabriel Calvo Espinoza’s remains to his hometown in Mexico for burial. Sake Japanese Bistro organized a GoFundMe campaign that seeks to raise $6,000—almost $4,500 has been donated so far—to cover transportation, funeral, and family support costs.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • Room At The Inn homeless shelter in Columbia is gathering donations to remain open on Saturdays through mid-March – this action aims to support the growing number of homeless individuals after Turning Point closed its Saturday services. The funds will cover 37 weeks of staffing, meal, and transportation costs, and if donations exceed the target by 50% the shelter will add Sunday service before winter begins.  ABC 17

  • A new restaurant (Scratch Italian Fare) will open in downtown Columbia this fall as it is under construction with details (such as its exact location) still pending.  Inside Columbia
  • Magnolia’s Whisky & Wine Bar in the restored Niedermeyer Building opens its doors to the public this weekend. At 4 p.m. on Friday, patrons will enjoy modern takes on whisky cocktails and a global selection of wines on the wrap-around porch, and the venue is at 920 Cherry Street, suite 101.  Inside Columbia

CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday night, Zarian Simpson was fatally shot at a Columbia apartment complex after graduating from Hickman High School — Steven Padden, 34, was charged with first-degree robbery, armed criminal action and second-degree felony murder with a confined docket hearing set for Thursday, June 26 and a preliminary hearing scheduled for Monday, July 15 while Simpson’s family urged parents to break the cycle of youth violence.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rehabilitation work on the northbound U.S. 63 bridge over I-70 will begin on June 25 and shift head-to-head traffic from Broadway to Vandiver Drive—forcing northbound drivers to stay in the left lane between the Broadway overpass and Conley underpass. Southbound drivers will face little change as exit and entrance ramps remain open—MoDOT said.  KOMU 8
  • The city of Columbia will repair sidewalks next week at the southwest corner of East Walnut and North Sixth and the southeast corner of East Ash and North Eighth to fix curb ramps for ADA compliance—temporary changes include sidewalk and parking closures until work ends by 6 p.m. next Wednesday weather permitting.  KOMU 8

  • On Monday, June 23, Main Squeeze will host a vegan pop-up event featuring a $40 prix fixe dinner — created by Chef Max Garcia-Rubio using fresh, in-season produce — and a kids menu. Ten percent of sales will benefit the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture while seating is open and guests can call ahead or message for reservations during the 5 to 8 p.m. event.  Inside Columbia
