Good morning, Columbia.
Columbia police and University of Missouri Police investigated the Eastgate Apartment complex on Sunday night as officers searched for three armed suspects—several police vehicles, crime scene tape, and a closed section of West Broadway were noted at the scene.
On June 10th, the Downtown Community Improvement District demonstrated heavy steel safety barriers in downtown Columbia to help stop vehicles from ramming into crowds during street closures.
The District is working with the city to acquire a chain gate and L-shaped barrier system—designed for emergency vehicle access—so larger events can be planned by 2026.
Columbia City Council will review a study on pedestrian safety and may sign a contract with HDR Engineering to update the city's action plan and High-Injury Network map for safer streets—this contract, which costs up to $250,000 with 80% funded by a federal grant, is expected to lead to projects that will continue through early winter.
Nearly 450 Missourians in jail are waiting for mental health care as they await competency restoration with an average 14-month wait and a rise of over 40% since last year—DMH director Nora Bock said a pilot program has helped 18 individuals receive treatment in jails—while staffing shortages and slow legislative action complicate progress.
