CRIME NEWS

  • A Columbia man accused in a 2024 homicide and arson was ordered by a judge on Tuesday to undergo a mental evaluation by the Missouri Department of Mental Health, and his case remains suspended until the report is submitted within sixty days—charges include murder, arson, armed criminal action and fraudulent use of a credit device.  KOMU 8
  • A Columbia home healthcare worker, Elexis Martin, 21, was charged with stealing a client’s debit card when police reviewed video showing her attempted use at a gas station after leaving the home at 2:13 p.m.—she is held without bond in Boone County Jail and faces felony charges for Possession of Controlled Substance and Stealing along with a misdemeanor for Fraudulent Use of a Credit/Debit Device.  KRCG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Columbia Public Schools board approved a debt collection agreement with Ability Recovery Services LLC in a 6-1 vote on June 9—urging families with hardship on meal balances to call nutrition services—and noted that the program does not eliminate all debt while students continue to receive meals.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • Hallsville School District said Wednesday that a bond issue approved by 74% of voters in April will not be certified because the Boone County Clerk’s Office published notices too early — state law requires they be issued within one week before the election. Superintendent Tyler Walker said the board will look at other options such as placing the bond on a future ballot.  ABC 17

  • Columbia's Stormwater Utility will temporarily block a southbound lane at Broadway—Providence for pavement repairs starting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 16 and finishing by 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.  ABC 17

  • Bags 'n Wags is a free event for dog lovers set for this Saturday from 4 to 10:30 p.m. at Cherry Hill Village Square—featuring a Cornhole Competition at 4, a Costume Contest at 4:45, Pet Olympics at 5:30, a Pet Show at 6:30 and an Outdoor Movie at 8:45—and offering additional activities like doghouse building, local vendor shopping, crafts, live music and pet adoptions with donations benefiting local humane groups.  Inside Columbia
