CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A man was injured in a shooting on East Walnut Street in downtown Columbia on Sunday morning at about 1:48 a.m.—police said no one has been taken into custody and the victim did not need hospital care, with several vehicles showing bullet holes near evidence markers on North Ninth Street. - ➤ Columbia police responded to a robbery on Business Loop 70 West on June 5 and a shooting on East Walnut Street on June 8 while the fire department battled a residential fire on Fallbrook Drive that left no injuries but caused three firefighters to experience heat exhaustion — investigators continue to search for suspects and determine the fire's cause. - ➤ On Saturday, several University of Missouri and MU Healthcare workers met in a town hall held by Liuna Local 955 to ask for better wages and safer work conditions while leaders did not attend. Attendees shared concerns about rising parking pass prices, poor quality personal protection equipment, and exposure to hazardous conditions—some urging hazard pay for risky roles. KRCG
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Columbia Board of Education approved next school year's budget on Monday night—roughly $307 million in spending with about three-quarters allocated to staff salaries and benefits—and it had earlier set a new salary schedule in April to raise base pay for teachers. ABC 17
- ➤ Missouri lawmakers extended a rule that lets retired teachers work as substitutes without losing their retirement benefits until 2030, using a bipartisan education package to help fill the teacher shortage (worsened by COVID-19). Columbia Daily Tribune
- ➤ The Mizzou Botanic Garden covers 1,252 acres on campus and has 18 specialty gardens and 6,000 trees—showing native and ornamental plants in open-air settings. Visitors can join self-guided or guided tours—learning about evolving landscape features as new plant varieties emerge. COMO Magazine

- ➤ On Monday, June 9, the City of Columbia held an office hour session with city staff and council members to discuss how federal and state executive orders may affect its strategic plan and risk federal funding—additional sessions will be held on Wednesday, June 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Fire Training Academy, Thursday, June 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the ARC, and Sunday, June 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the regional library. The city will also host a block party on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Douglas Park—residents can learn about city services while enjoying food, music and games. ABC 17
