CRIME NEWS

  • A Boone County jury found 42-year-old Charlie Sneed guilty on counts of unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action for shooting at a vehicle on East Broadway in downtown Columbia last year, and he has 25 days to file a motion for a new trial.  KOMU 8
  • Columbia police arrested D’Nozea V. Spain and Quaychell Nunnelly for drug trafficking on June 4 after following leads to a gas station where officers seized 20 grams of fentanyl and 7.5 grams of meth—court documents show Spain was known as a fentanyl dealer since 2022 while Nunnelly arranged an $180 sale and both are held without bond.  KRCG

CULTURE NEWS

  • Art in the Park returns to Stephens Lake Park this weekend—visitors can enjoy artist booths, kids activities, live entertainment and food trucks on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Inside Columbia
  • Columbia is hosting a series of Juneteenth events from June 7 to 29 that include a kickoff at Second Missionary Baptist Church, a main celebration with live music, free food and resource booths at Douglass Park on June 19—followed by a downtown parade on June 21.  Columbia Daily Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State education leaders updated their plan to close 12 schools for disabled students, including Columbia’s Delmar Cobble school which closed in February because of a staff shortage—this fall, the move is expected to save nearly $13 million.  KRCG
  • MSHP released its annual bus inspection results on Thursday, showing that 85.5% of the 62 Jefferson City School District buses passed, up from 69.1% approved last year—none were rated out of service.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Senate passed a special session package that provides $100 million in storm relief, $25 million for emergency housing, incentives for new or improved stadiums to keep the Kansas City teams, and $50 million for the MU Research Reactor following Gov. Mike Kehoe’s request. The bills now go to the House for approval before the teams’ decision deadline at the end of the month—making it likely the package will soon become law.  KOMU 8
  • Columbia Parks and Recreation said that Emery Sapp & Sons will start work on the concrete end walls for a new 65‐foot pedestrian bridge near Flat Branch Park this month + the bridge is expected to be installed in August. The project is funded by a donation from Emery Sapp & Sons + city funds and private donations and will include cleanup, lighting, and an outdoor art display before it is completed by November.  KOMU 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • Seamus Levin, a Columbia resident with sleep apnea, did not get timely follow-up care after his primary care provider left and he was told a new assignment would occur in March. Experts say nearly every Missouri county is a health professional shortage area — 111 of 114 counties — which has left many residents without enough care.  ABC 17

SPORTS NEWS

  • Faurot Field will expand its capacity from 62,000 to 65,000 by 2026 as renovations on the north end zone add a new multi-level concourse with premium suites—officials say the upgrade will temporarily move the team store while preserving Tiger traditions for the stadium's 100th anniversary.  KRCG
