BUSINESS NEWS

  • Starting Sept. 25, United Airlines will resume service at Columbia Regional Airport with one daily flight to Denver International Airport (based on a 2024 passenger demand analysis) and two daily flights to Chicago O'Hare International Airport (after a suspension during the pandemic).  Inside Columbia

CRIME NEWS

  • A Boone County grand jury indicted Hallsville businessman Ches A. Heitmeyer with five counts of stealing $750 or more and five counts of deceptive business practice after he defrauded five people in 2023 by promising a rooftop solar system installation — he bonded out on a $50,000 bond.  KRCG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A discrimination lawsuit filed against Columbia Public Schools in 2023 was dismissed with prejudice on Tuesday. The lawsuit— which alleged that an Oakland Middle School student was mistreated and constructively expelled on Dec. 20— was voluntarily dismissed on Friday.  ABC 17

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Columbia residents turned to nearby recycling sites in Ashland and Jefferson City after an EF1 tornado destroyed the city’s recovery center in April — officials say excess drop-offs and non-recyclable items are straining operations and driving up disposal costs.  KOMU 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missourians may get extra money if the Senate approves the GOP tax plan — it would raise the standard deduction by $1,000 for single filers and $2,000 for joint filers from now until the end of 2028 and lower state revenue by at least $170 million. Rep. Jason Smith said the move could bring relief to 94 percent of taxpayers in his district.  ABC 17
  • Columbia City Council will host office hour meetings to discuss how changes to the city's equity statement may affect federal funding — the sessions come amid concerns about possible funding losses. Residents can attend on June 7, June 9, June 11, or June 15 at various local sites for more details.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • The Missouri Department of Transportation has launched an online portal to invite public feedback on local transportation needs for its 25-year plan. Comments on the draft long-range and freight and rail plans must be received by June 30—residents without internet access can call between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.  KOMU 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • Richard J. Sherwood from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia received a $2.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to create a database of 40,000 3D images and develop new craniofacial growth models—tools that may help doctors plan treatments for children with facial anomalies.  KOMU 8
  • In Missouri, 111 out of 114 counties are designated as Health Professional Shortage Areas, leaving many residents without enough primary care doctors. Health experts say the state is currently short around 500 primary care physicians and will lose an extra 2,000 by 2026 (mostly affecting rural areas).  ABC 17
