COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Cosmo Bike Park in Columbia is now open just in time for summer. The park was dedicated on May 22 and built with a $250,000 donation from Veterans United Foundation and $300,000 from the Frank W. Morris Memorial Trust Committee—offering a designated trailhead, pump track, bike playground and trails maintained by park staff and COMO Trails Association volunteers. KOMU 8
- ➤ The Columbia Farmers Market takes place every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon in the MU Health Care Pavilion and features over 80 vendors with fresh produce, baked goods and live music, with the Midweek Market having returned on May 28. The Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture at 1769 W. Ash St. runs a ten-acre Agriculture Park in Clary-Shy Community Park and is building an 11,000-square-foot Community Welcome Center — a new hub for public events and resources. COMO Magazine
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Authorities charged Octavious Bradshaw, 29, with four felonies after his five-hour standoff with Columbia police on Summit Road — the charges were filed following the incident. Columbia Missourian
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Conservation agents in Columbia explained that local wildlife such as coyotes, foxes, and snakes are part of a long-established habitat and that myths about copperheads and mountain lions harming pets or children are greatly exaggerated. They noted that as the city grows, people are moving into animal territory – a reminder that successful conservation efforts have made native species more visible. COMO Magazine
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At a pre-council meeting Monday, Columbia City Council looked at ideas to rebuild the recycling facility that closed on April 20 after a tornado hit it. Kate Vasquez from RRT Design and Construction explained three plans—one to rebuild at the old site, one at the landfill, and one on a gravel lot—and recommended the second option, which is estimated to cost about $26.4 million and offer safe traffic flow. - ➤ Megan Krohn has been named the new chief dental consultant at the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and will begin improving oral health for Missourians on June 16. She worked nine years as executive vice president at Swope Health after earning oral surgery honors from the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Dentistry. KOMU 8
