COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ All five public pools in Columbia opened this weekend after cool weather and rain delayed the season, marking the first full reopening since 2019. The venues include outdoor pools at Albert Oakland Park, Douglass Park, and Lake of the Woods, as well as indoor facilities at the Activity and Recreation Center and Hickman High School—upgraded features at Lake of the Woods and Douglass Pool add more fun. - ➤ Mayor Barbara Buffaloe presented an official Pride proclamation and gave a speech at today's Pride Month Kickoff event (marking the start of the celebration). Local community members gathered to show their support. Columbia Missourian
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Missouri lawmakers passed a bill that lets homeschool students join public school sports teams this fall— the bill now awaits Gov. Kehoe’s decision by July 15. Lawmakers and homeschool advocates worked for more than 12 years to secure the law— students will join extracurricular activities beginning August. Columbia Daily Tribune
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Drivers in Columbia are urged to watch for three-toed box turtles crossing roads as they begin their spring search for food and mates. Herpetologist Jeff Briggler said the Missouri Department of Conservation advises drivers to let turtles cross safely and not to put them back where they were found — heavy traffic can harm many of these creatures. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Columbia City Council met today to review options for restoring the recycling program, which include rebuilding a facility, transferring recyclables, or creating a multi-material environmental center—each option costing $20 million or more and taking 18 to 30 months. The council also recognized Lisa Meyer’s service and will swear in Erin Keys as utilities director—while planning park improvements at Twin Lakes Recreation Area with $350,000 in sales tax funds.
