COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The COMO Juneteenth Parade will start at 10 a.m. June 20 at Hitt Street and Broadway and is one of several events planned to honor freedom and local heritage in Columbia.  Columbia Missourian
  • The Columbia Farmers Market holds a weekly Wednesday market from 4 to 7 p.m. under the MU Health Care Pavilion at 1769 W Ash St until August's end. It gives more farmers extra selling time and offers SNAP and WIC benefits plus punch card rewards — extra savings for shoppers.  KRCG

CULTURE NEWS

  • Missouri's top baby names for 2025 were released by the Social Security Administration on May 27 — the data shows Oliver and Theodore as the leading boy names and Charlotte and Amelia as the top girl names based on newborn Social Security card applications.  Columbia Daily Tribune

  • Columbia student Ananya Aggarwal advanced to the semifinals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee — she said 'I did what I came here to do' after her round.  Columbia Missourian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missouri lawmakers passed a budget today that cuts 2 million in state funding for Double Up Food Bucks, the program that helps SNAP users buy fresh produce. The program will rely on federal & private funds, which may limit its expansion into areas outside Kansas City.  KOMU 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • ER visits for tick bites increased in Missouri with rates rising from 39 to 137 per 100,000 visits, raising concerns about alpha-gal syndrome, a red meat allergy that can cause symptoms such as hives and nausea (a Columbia resident manages her condition by avoiding red meat and dairy).  KOMU 8

  • Elevate COMO Volleyball in coordination with Columbia Parks and Recreation will launch a new youth volleyball league for third- to sixth-graders on June 3, offering scholarships and an affordable way to play; a free skills clinic is scheduled for July 9.  KOMU 8
