CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Seventeen-year-old Justin Lumley, Jr. from Columbia was charged as an adult with seven counts of Armed Criminal Action, five counts of First Degree Assault, two counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and one count of Property Damage for shooting at five people—actions that took place in December near El Chaparral Avenue and on January 27 near Mayflower Drive while he attempted to escape juvenile custody by helping two others flee. - ➤ Two people were arrested in Springfield on Sunday on suspicion of first-degree murder of Columbia man Cody Garrett, whose remains were found in 2021, and authorities say the suspects planned the killing for $50,000 in insurance money — new interviews, digital evidence, and lab tests led to the arrest. - ➤ Two people were arrested in Springfield on Sunday on suspicion of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the 2021 death of Columbia man Cody Garrett—reported missing on June 21 with his vehicle and remains later found near a bike park outside Warsaw—after investigators gathered new evidence from interviews and digital tests. - ➤ Columbia Public Schools graduated more than 1,400 seniors during ceremonies held May 24 and May 25 at the Missouri Theater and Mizzou Arena (students earned over $14.1 million in scholarships and grants and district leaders plan to track their next steps). Columbia Daily Tribune

- ➤ The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that Memorial Day weekend had fewer deaths, crashes, injuries, and DWI arrests than last year, with three fatalities, 182 crashes, 83 injuries, and 78 arrests recorded from 6 p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Monday—figures that could change if additional fatalities are reported late. - ➤ Governor Mike Kehoe will call a special legislative session beginning at noon on June 2 to address disaster relief and economic development. Lawmakers will consider funding for MU’s Radioisotope Science Center, extending tax credits for amateur sports, and building a facility to help keep the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs in Missouri — steps designed to spur recovery and boost economic growth.
