COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbia Regional Airport experienced a roughly 30-minute delay on the 11:41 a.m. American Airlines flight Monday due to Memorial Day storms and busy conditions at Dallas-Fort Worth. AAA reported that Memorial Day weekend was expected to see at least 45.1 million travelers — a record compared to last year—with flights for the rest of Monday departing and arriving on time.  ABC 17
  • The Memorial Day parade returns to honor veterans—marking the first parade since 2019 after longtime organizer Mary Posner died.  Columbia Missourian

CRIME NEWS

  • Gabino Cesar Hernandez, 28, was arrested on May 23 in Columbia for firing shots on Kentsfield Lane — witnesses said he appeared out of it and pointed his gun at victims before he told police he believed he had been drugged at a bar.  KRCG
  • Gabino C. Hernandez, a 28-year-old man accused of firing shots at the Aria Apartments in south Columbia, told police he was drugged at a bar and did not remember the events—he is held without bond after facing four felony charges.  ABC 17
  • Columbia police arrested Gabino Hernandez, 28, from McDonald County in connection with shots fired early Friday at Aria Apartments on Kentsfield Lane — he allegedly fired one shot in a parking lot and another from a building staircase while witnesses saw him with a gun — and he is held without bond in Boone County Jail after claiming he was drugged at a bar.  KOMU 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Louisville Courier Journal filed a complaint on Friday against a Kentucky school board that hired former Columbia Public Schools Superintendent Brian Yearwood. The complaint claims the board violated Kentucky’s Open Meetings Act by holding a closed session vote followed by a sham open session vote after a 5-2 decision on Thursday.  ABC 17
  • On Saturday, Columbia Public Schools held graduation ceremonies at Mizzou Arena with nearly 500 students from Rock Bridge and Hickman crossing the stage while more than 64% of graduates plan to pursue higher education. A report from the University of Missouri Board of Curators showed that enrollment in 11 of 13 public universities has declined since 2019 due to fewer high school graduates in the Midwest—prompting the UM System to expand recruitment in southeastern states.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missouri lawmakers will debate next Monday a plan that may have the state pay half of up to $3 billion for new stadiums to keep the Chiefs and Royals in Missouri. Gov. Mike Kehoe — who said keeping the teams helps local jobs — plans to include a $500 million construction package amid strong partisan tensions.  KOMU 8
