CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Columbia man faced felony animal abuse charges after he was accused of bringing an injured seagull from Florida on January 16 and amputating its wing with a pair of scissors and a torch after a housesitter called 911 for a bird stuck in a cage+ officials said the bird was later found severely emaciated with an infected wound before it was euthanized. - ➤ Aaron Lacey, a 48-year-old Columbia man, faces felony animal abuse charges for allegedly amputating a seagull’s left wing he brought from Florida—animal control said a house sitter reported the injured bird and it was later deemed unsalvageable. KOMU 8
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ With students on break, the University of Missouri has begun over $108 million in summer renovation projects across campus including repainting Jesse Hall and upgrading Memorial Union. Some work will finish by winter while other projects are scheduled for key dates like July 31 and Sept. 16, with major upgrades planned through 2026 (including a new stadium section and research facilities). - ➤ Columbia Public Schools held day two of graduation ceremonies yesterday at Mizzou Arena as nearly 500 students from Rock Bridge and Hickman High Schools crossed the stage. A report by the University of Missouri Board of Curators shows that 11 of Missouri’s 13 public universities experienced enrollment drops as institutions plan to boost recruitment in the Southeast—an effort prompted by a declining number of high school graduates in the Midwest. - ➤ At Rock Bridge High School—482 seniors graduated Saturday morning while families, friends and faculty celebrated the Class of 2025, which was the third of four Columbia Public Schools graduations this weekend. Columbia Missourian
