ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Columbia Regional Airport began a new Charlotte route today after American Airlines moved its first departing flight earlier than scheduled. The airport will open parking shuttles on June 1 and plan improvements this summer to support new routes starting June 3 and June 5. KOMU 8
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The UM System Board of Curators approved a 4% tuition increase for undergrads and a 3% rise for grad students on Thursday; new rates starting in fall will cost MU students about $287 more per semester as fees also rise 2.6–4% (supporting student services). KOMU 8
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ In Columbia, regular weekly curbside recycling will begin the week of June 15 — due to added staff and testing of automation — while a monthly drop-off location is in progress. In Ashland, bi-weekly pickup starts early June with bins provided and a $5.18 fee increase on bills. KOMU 8
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Resurfacing on the west outer road of U.S. 63 between Columbia and Ashland begins May 26. Crews will resurface a segment of Missouri 163 and Tom Bass Road from Boone County Route H to Meyer Industrial Drive with one lane open (7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mon-Fri) until mid-June. KOMU 8
- ➤ MoDOT announced that over 1,000 simultaneous work zones are expected this summer and non-permanent zones on I-70 will be suspended ahead of Memorial Day weekend travel; the Highway Patrol said extra officers will be deployed on I-70 to ease congestion (officials stressed safety). KOMU 8
- ➤ The Boone County Office of Emergency Management used its new outdoor warning siren system in April to issue tornado and severe weather alerts. The system works by activating individual sirens based on weather polygons & is overseen by operators who can revert to the old zone system if needed. KOMU 8
- ➤ Columbia's new roundabout at Conley Road and Business Loop 70 is now open after construction began on March 23 to replace a signalized intersection. Officials advise that drivers use caution as the remaining sign work is completed+ the project is part of MoDOT’s Improve I-70 Program. KOMU 8
