COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbia Parks and Recreation will begin removing trail debris today after Monday’s storms knocked down trees and flooded low-water crossings; the department urged residents to avoid driving on low-water bridges (turn around, don't drown) and crushed limestone trails.  KOMU 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mizzou began construction of a 31,250 sqft Radioisotope Science Center at Discovery Ridge Research Park to produce isotopes for medicine, research and national security. The joint investment by the U.S. Department of Energy and the state will offer training when it opens in 2028.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • CPS named Cynthia Martin as the new principal for Cedar Ridge Elementary for the 2026-27 school year, replacing Carlei Wies. Martin (former assistant principal at Cedar Ridge, Grant and New Haven) has served in the district for years and earned a doctoral degree from William Woods University.  Columbia Daily Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Columbia Solid Waste Utility said curbside recycling will resume June 15 after an April tornado halted pickups. In partnership with Jefferson City and an Illinois processor, officials rebuilt parts of the system — letting residents place recycling materials at the curb on regular days.  KOMU 8
  • The Solarize Columbia campaign ended, cutting nearly 1 million pounds of carbon dioxide and generating $1.1 million for clean energy development in Boone County — boosting local renewable energy efforts.  Columbia Missourian
  • Storms disrupted power in Columbia Monday morning, leaving nearly 1,800 customers without electricity across six incidents and improving from a peak of over 3,700 customers earlier. Crews are fixing outages caused by falling trees+ additional outages remain in nearby counties.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MoDOT will investigate noise levels on I-70 between Rocheport and Columbia with studies planned to wrap up soon—residents in affected areas will vote on installing sound walls.  Columbia Missourian
  • Allegiant Air will start a new flight to Florida from Columbia Regional Airport on Nov. 19, offering direct travel to St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport. The city council approved an air services agreement that runs until June 1, supporting $800,000 in revenue from fees (and enabling continued travel connections).  KOMU 8
  • MoDOT said the Providence Road overpass on I-70 will close May 29 at 9 p.m. for demolition lasting until 9 a.m. May 31, causing one-lane traffic in both directions; construction will then continue until October to widen the bridge (with pedestrian crossings and decorative features).  ABC 17
  • MoDOT postponed closing two westbound I-70 ramps in Columbia due to rainy weather; crews will now begin the closure at 8 p.m. today, ending by 2 a.m. Wednesday and drivers should plan to use alternate routes.  ABC 17
