COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local Motion is celebrating Bike, Walk and Wheel Week by offering free breakfast stations today from 7 to 9 a.m. at several spots including Ash/Aldeah intersection and Flat Branch Park — commuters using walking, biking or transit are encouraged to bring a reusable mug for coffee to go.  Inside Columbia

  • Columbia is transforming its blighted Business Loop into a vital market center—local makers are working to revive neglected roads and areas. The project will boost local business and create new job opportunities.  Columbia Missourian

CRIME NEWS

  • Two juveniles were arrested on May 14th in connection to a gunpoint robbery near Jack Estes Way and North Williams Street on May 9th—both facing charges of First-Degree Robbery and Armed Criminal Action.  KRCG
  • The Columbia Police Department is asking for help finding 16-year-old Desire Smith, who was last seen at 5 p.m. on February 5th near the 4500 block of Rice Road (she is 5'6 and weighs about 143 pounds with dark brown hair and eyes).  KRCG

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Arcade District will host CoolFest 2025 on Saturday from 1-7 p.m. at 602 Fay Street. Attendees can enjoy games, live music, food trucks, the Makers Market, DungeonCon, live panels, family activities + cosplay with free entry.  Inside Columbia
  • After a several-year hiatus, the Shelter Insurance Concert in the Gardens series will return on Sunday, May 18, with the Columbia Community Band performing from 5-7 p.m. at Shelter Gardens – 1817 West Broadway; the free event encourages attendees to bring lawn chairs or blankets and notes that smoking and alcohol are not permitted.  ABC 17

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a recent board meeting, Adam Taylor was named chief academic officer effective July 1—replacing Jeff Klein—and Allison Chostner became principal at Benton STEM Elementary for the next school year—replacing Sarah Sicht.  Columbia Daily Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Department of Conservation announced it will host free fishing days on June 7th and 8th when people across Missouri can fish without a permit. Anglers will need to follow size and catch limits and may require special permits in some areas — a measure that applies even during this statewide event.  KRCG
