BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ The Puri Group—owner of the decaying Truman Hotel—has proposed a new $150 million convention center along Highway 63 near Vandiver Drive after Columbia city council approved the necessary zoning changes. The project will include a 46,000-square-foot event space with a ballroom, outdoor patio and two hotels, while Jefferson City’s mayor said the group should first tear down the old hotel. KRCG
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Columbia Police arrested Ray L. Smith Jr., aged 40, of Blue Springs after he threatened shoppers at Walmart on Conley Road on May 11 and resisted orders to leave, with officers using a taser to detain him — he now faces charges of trespassing, making a terrorist threat, and resisting arrest. - ➤ Kieran Piersee, 18, was arrested after shooting a 32-year-old man who was cutting through an apartment yard during an argument on Friday in the 900 block of Moss Street, and he was charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon while the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his calf and foot. - ➤ Tatijana Fisher, a poultry expert at Lincoln University, said Missouri families buying backyard chickens to lower egg costs may spend more because feed and care cost a lot. She warned that small flocks are more at risk of bird flu — so local homeowners might be better off buying eggs from the store. KOMU 8
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Governor Mike Kehoe announced Monday the full slate of 16 members for the Missouri School Funding Modernization Task Force, including five mid-Missouri representatives such as Columbia’s Mike Podgursky and Donald Thalhuber—tasked with reviewing and recommending changes to Missouri’s K-12 school funding and providing a final report by Dec. 1, 2026. The group, led by former educator Rusty Black, brings together superintendents, teachers, policy experts, and state officials to shape the funding overhaul. KOMU 8
- ➤ At Monday's School Board meeting, Columbia Public Schools reported that online course enrollments doubled from 1,104 to 2,497 between fall 2023 and fall 2024—while fewer students failed online courses compared to before. The district also announced it expects to receive $147.8 million from property tax and $83.8 million in state funds—along with $3.1 million in one-time budget additions for school updates and a new math curriculum. - ➤ The city warns residents about a scam email imitating City Manager De’Carlon Seewood that asks for payment via wire transfer with inflated fees (the email comes from [email protected] instead of a genuine CoMo.gov address). KOMU 8

- ➤ Local autism treatment program director Myles Hinkel said he supports federal plans for an autism registry if it protects patient privacy & safety. The registry will be created using insurance claims, electronic records and data from wearable devices and will initially target Medicare and Medicaid enrollees before expanding to study other chronic conditions.
