COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local Motion launched the 23rd Bike, Walk, and Wheel Week on Mother's Day weekend — events include groups riding at Stephens Lake Park and gatherings across town to promote active travel. The celebration will continue Tuesday with a free bike and wheelchair wash at Logboat Brewery and finish Friday with Breakfast Station Day at several locations.  KOMU 8
  • Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church will lose a key funding source when the Turning Point Day Resource Center moves to the Opportunity Campus next year — a change expected to drop its budget by $350,000. The church hosted a town hall on May 11 to plan for new funding to cover the loss.  KOMU 8

CRIME NEWS

  • A passenger was left in serious condition after a suspected DWI crash on Saturday evening when Columbia driver Saul Diaz, 25, crossed the center line on the 3800 Block of Ponderosa Street and struck an oncoming vehicle—Diaz was arrested on multiple charges as EMS transported all injured to a local hospital and the investigation continues.  KOMU 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Columbia Public Schools board will review how local tax changes, a freeze for Boone County seniors and Senate Bill 727 affect its budget during today's meeting as CFO Heather McArthur presents a finance update. Staff will also consider a contract to sponsor international educators via a visa program — along with several policy and construction updates — as the district plans for increased expenses through the 2029-30 school year.  Columbia Daily Tribune
