CULTURE NEWS

  • More is More Jewelry is hosting a vintage charm necklace-making event at Beet Box this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Founder Frances will guide participants in selecting a necklace style as she builds custom pieces with deadstock gold bar link chains and a variety of vintage charms.  Inside Columbia

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hermann High School in Gasconade County was evacuated at 10:45 a.m. Thursday after a hoax threat prompted immediate safety measures — local law enforcement and Capitol police later confirmed the school was safe for return.  ABC 17
  • The MU Canvas system went down around 3 p.m. Thursday after a group called SHINYHUNTERS claimed to breach the site, warning universities to negotiate before data leaks occur on May 12. MU said it worked with Canvas to restore access and advised the campus community to check status.missouri.edu for updates.  KOMU 8
  • MU Study Abroad is hosting Passports and Pups to help students de-stress before finals by petting puppies and learning about passport renewals and study abroad options on campus.  Columbia Missourian
  • Librarians at the University of Missouri voted on Thursday to join LiUNA Local 955 (certification will take a few days) after they announced their intent to unionize in December; the university said it remains committed to open dialogue with the union.  ABC 17
  • Stephens College has named theater and arts leader Joseph Price as dean of its Conservatory for the Performing Arts, effective July 6. He brings over 25 years of experience in higher education and professional theater — his appointment is expected to boost the conservatory’s dynamic training programs.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • Commencement ceremonies are scheduled in Columbia for spring graduates from today until May 17; University of Missouri events begin on May 15, with multiple ceremonies at Mizzou Arena and Jesse Auditorium — free parking and clear bag policies apply.  KOMU 8
  • Following debates at the recent school board election, Columbia Public Schools is drafting revised bullying policies & planning public feedback sessions. The new proposals aim to address community concerns and will be reviewed in the coming weeks to enhance student safety.  Columbia Missourian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MoDOT will begin pedestrian improvements on Grindstone Parkway Monday by updating sidewalks, curb ramps, and pavement approaches between Providence Road and U.S. 63. Crews may close lanes (9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays) and nearby entrances as work continues until the end of July.  KOMU 8
  • Missouri has asked FEMA to survey damage in 11 counties after severe weather—tornadoes, hail, wind, and flooding—hit from April 23 to April 28; joint assessments with local and state officials will help shape federal disaster aid requests.  KOMU 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • The new Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment opened today in Columbia, offering families combined services in speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, and applied behavior analysis along with a sensory playground and a specialized outpatient program (job listings are available online).  KOMU 8

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Columbia College has withdrawn demolition permit applications for two historic properties in First Ward. The structures (built in the 1910s and 1920s and purchased in 2019) will remain preserved.  Columbia Missourian
