COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mid-Missouri organizers with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) are set to hold the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 9, with residents encouraged to leave non-perishable food items by their mailbox for pickup to support local food banks during the busy summer.  KRCG
  • Columbia nonprofits P.E.A.C.E & H.O.P.E will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, May 11 at 203 N. Providence Road for their new Teen Center that offers mentorship, educational support and leadership programs for at-risk youth; the center received part of its funding through city ARPA dollars.  ABC 17

  • Murry’s Restaurant will open a second downtown location in the fall in the space at East Broadway + Eighth Street that Sycamore once occupied. The owners plan to uphold the welcoming jazz club atmosphere and add to the vibrant downtown energy.  KOMU 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chef Mark Sulltrop and Chef Jeff Guinn will host the 'Celebration of Missouri Food and Wine' dinner Monday, June 15 at Midway Golf and Games (adjacent to Toptracer bays) with four courses paired with wines from Stone Hill Winery as part of a scholarship fundraiser for Mizzou Hospitality Management School.  COMO Magazine

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Missouri's Department of Conservation now offers 2,000 black bear permits and five elk permits for fall; applications are open and a free online course on bear hunting is available. The bear season runs Oct. 17-30 in three zones, while the elk season runs Oct. 17-25 (archery) and Dec. 12-20 (firearms).  Columbia Daily Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Westbound I-70 traffic shifted to new lanes Monday evening between Paris Road and U.S. Highway 63 to let crews work on a flyover ramp and new pavement — all ramps stayed open and vehicles using Highway 63 got an extended merge lane.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • Early Monday, a vandal-caused fiber cable cut disrupted Boone County 911 services — dispatchers tracked incoming calls and urged callers to dial 911 again for emergencies. Crews are on site testing for repairs as some hospitals and public safety agencies face phone issues.  ABC 17
  • The Missouri Department of Conservation is reviewing a proposal to limit non-resident deer hunting by cutting the antlered buck bag limit from two to one, with the Conservation Commission set to decide later this month + the change could take effect on June 30 if approved.  KRCG
  • A lane on eastbound I-70 near St. Charles Road was closed Monday at 3 p.m. for emergency pavement repairs by MoDOT and reopened Tuesday morning. The repairs are part of the ongoing Improve I-70 Program near mile marker 131.  KOMU 8
