COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Smooth Noodles won the 2026 Booneanza treasure hunt by solving countywide puzzles and uncovering a 2.53-carat diamond valued at $10,000 (found at 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday). The event raised nearly $13,000 for the Boone County Historical Society and will offer a lower-cost version of the hunt for interested community members. KOMU 8
- ➤ Community members expressed concern after a suicide occurred on Thursday near the downtown parking garage at Fifth and Walnut and Ward 1 Councilwoman Valerie Carroll plans to contact the city manager to discuss additional safety measures. ABC 17
- ➤ Veteran's Outdoor Therapy held its first turkey hunt retreat for combat veterans, offering turkey hunts and fishing for veterans from Missouri+Ohio+Nebraska. Donations from local businesses support the trips, and a Poker Run scheduled for June 20 in Columbia will follow later this year. KOMU 8

- ➤ Toby Arquette has completed 60 days as president at Columbia College and is committed to radical transparency, academic excellence and serving future leaders. Columbia Missourian
- ➤ Boone County will host its free, five-day Girls in Emergency Management Camp that offers high school girls hands-on experience in public safety, government and emergency management. The camp runs June 1-5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with applications due by Tuesday, May 19. KOMU 8
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Columbia announced road work on May 4 and May 5 that will shift lanes for pavement testing on East Green Meadows Road and Veterans United Parkway and install an air conditioning unit on East Walnut Street. Detours will guide traffic and pedestrians while work is underway. KOMU 8
- ➤ MDC updated its fall hunting permits. The agency will offer 2,000 black bear permits — harvest quota raised to 60 from Oct. 17-30 — and five bull elk permits for an archery season Oct. 17-25 and a firearms season Dec. 12-20. KOMU 8
