COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ First Chance for Children in Columbia received about 180,000 donated diapers to help families struggling with higher costs. The group will distribute the diapers to partner agencies in central Missouri on April 29 and 30 with help from Veterans United—who provided its loading dock and staff. KOMU 8
- ➤ Columbia Parks and Recreation announced the skate park at Douglass Park reopened after improvements doubled its size and added new features for skaters—funded partly by a 2021 Park Sales Tax and a matching grant from the Department of Economic Development. The project, authorized by City Council in June 2023, enhanced the park's facilities for local users. KOMU 8
- ➤ Central Missouri Community Action's Women and Infant Relief Fund will host its annual Bingo for Babies fundraiser at 5:30 p.m. on May 7 at Sentinel Park at Arcade District—aiming to raise $20,000 for programs that provide essential support to pre- and postpartum families while only $1,575 has been raised so far. - ➤ The Melt Masters food truck was burglarized and vandalized on Business Loop 70 over the weekend—thieves stole cash, technology, and merchandise while a second truck was also broken into and a third showed signs of an attempted break-in. KOMU 8
- ➤ Christian Blackmore, 31, of Sunrise Beach has been charged with six felonies for allegedly trafficking stolen identities, vehicle tampering, drug possession, evidence tampering, driving a revoked license and displaying incorrect plates after police found personal documents in a stolen Dodge Caravan at Versailles Walmart on April 20—an extradition order was filed Tuesday, April 22. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Missouri has been recognized as a StormReady university by the National Weather Service after meeting strict safety and communication requirements. Emergency management coordinator Jerry Jenkins (who led the project) said students and staff (including StormReady coordinator Thomas Schwent) helped build reliable warning systems for severe weather. - ➤ Emergency officials held a mass casualty training exercise Monday at Columbia Regional Airport where police, fire and ambulance services simulated a plane crash with volunteer actors—this triennial drill is meant to improve their response to real aircraft disasters. KOMU 8
- ➤ Yesterday, emergency agencies at Columbia Regional Airport completed a plane crash training drill that used a transit bus to simulate injured passengers—allowing firefighters, medics and other responders to practice realistic response times. The exercise met FAA triennial requirements—ensuring they are well prepared for a potential disaster. ABC 17
