ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Tuesday attic fire at Columbia United Church of Christ was ruled accidental by the Fire Department after HVAC work with a torch heating material ignited combustibles — the incident caused $5,500 in damage and led to the evacuation of 11 preschool students without injuries.  ABC 17
  • Columbia Utilities and the Columbia Fire Department responded to a transformer fire near Smiley Lane and Arctic Fox Drive on Thursday night that left nearly 1,400 customers without power—crews are working to restore service.  KOMU 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Friday, Columbia College held its 125th annual Ivy Chain Ceremony to honor graduating students—including MaKayla Watson, who did not let multiple sclerosis stop her dreams. The college celebrated its long-standing tradition and will hold commencement ceremonies today at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.  KOMU 8
  • Former school board candidate Ken Rice said over $124K in unpaid lunch bills is putting added stress on local families and urged community donations to the Lunch for Learners fund — which covers meals for students facing short-term financial hardships. He said he will join the district’s wellness committee to work on long-term solutions for the growing debt.  ABC 17
  • The University of Missouri will be honored with the National Weather Service StormReady designation—recognizing its severe weather preparedness and emergency communication systems. A ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Monday on Francis Quadrangle where representatives from the Meteorology Club, the National Weather Service and MU Emergency Management will receive their awards.  KOMU 8
  • Columbia Public Schools announced on Friday that Samantha Adams will be the new principal at Locust Street Expressive Arts Elementary School and will replace Julia Coggins, who is moving to John Warner Middle School as assistant principal. Adams currently serves as principal at Mill Creek Elementary and brings over 16 years of experience (including roles as teacher and instructional mentor) to her new position.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Columbia will resume curbside recycling on Monday to help residents maintain their recycling habits after an EF-1 tornado destroyed the recycling facility last Sunday—while drop-off centers stay closed, all recyclables will be taken to the landfill until a new solution is set up.  ABC 17
