COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Beacon of Light Community Center opens at 10 a.m. April 28 at 1801 Towne Dr. United Community Builders invites locals to join guided tours, meet staff and enjoy light refreshments+ learn about programs, classes and volunteer opportunities at the new facility.  KOMU 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Columbia Public Schools announced that Douglass High School principal Eryca Neville is named the district’s executive director of alternative education today – she will oversee new programs while continuing her principal duties to strengthen supports for students with diverse needs.  Columbia Daily Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Treasurer’s Office mistakenly published MOScholars student data including names, parental emails, and funding details from May 2025 and removed the file today. Lawmakers called the incident a significant oversight that raises concerns about program management.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • A year after a tornado destroyed the recycling facility, the city is accepting bids to rebuild the structure on its old foundation; the project is expected to restore normal operations within 12 to 18 months, with current services continuing outdoors amid wind and rain challenges.  KOMU 8
  • Boone County Fire Protection District announced Chief Jake Heller as its new Bureau Director of Special Operations — he brings over 20 years of fire protection experience and 14 years on Missouri Task Force 1 to guide both roles.  KOMU 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • MU Health Care will open a clinic in Holts Summit on May 5 at 180 Northstar Dr. The clinic will operate weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offer traditional appointments, telehealth and same-day sick care for patients two+ in partnership with MU Sinclair School of Nursing.  KOMU 8
  • MU Health Care will open a primary care clinic in Holts Summit on Tuesday, May 5 at 180 Northstar Dr — the facility will offer appointments, telehealth, and same-day sick care for patients aged 2 and older while serving as a training site for MU Sinclair School of Nursing.  ABC 17
  • Today, the Maternal Health Access Project works to lower the risks Black women face during pregnancy by linking health providers with a University of Missouri hotline. The project — with 72 Boone County providers enrolled — will add help for heart and other conditions in the next two years.  KOMU 8

  • Mark Jones, athletic director at Central Missouri Saints (homeschool baseball), said a new team was started because local players had no place to play. The team unites players and families in Columbia.  Columbia Missourian
