COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Daniel Boone Regional Library is launching a capital campaign to raise $1 million for two aging bookmobiles that serve over 1,500 monthly patrons. A ribbon-cutting and tour will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Apr. 20 (at the library’s overflow parking lot on Walnut and Garth Streets).  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • Veterans in Columbia can get free legal help from the University of Missouri School of Law Veterans Clinic. The service covers VA benefits, discharge upgrades and health care and is scheduled for April 22 at the Family Impact Center (registration required).  Columbia Daily Tribune

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An American Airlines flight scheduled to depart for Dallas/Fort Worth at 12:06 p.m. is delayed at Columbia Regional Airport after an auxiliary power unit malfunction forced all passengers off the plane, according to airport manager Mike Parks, with no injuries reported.  ABC 17
  • The Columbia Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 2800 block of Isherwood Drive at 7:40 a.m. Friday — candles started the blaze, three residents evacuated safely, no people were injured, and two dogs died.  KOMU 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown is buzzing as the Unbound Book Festival hosts over 30 literary events this weekend in Columbia. The festival brings together readers and writers for interactive sessions and book signings.  Columbia Missourian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Columbia Public Schools’ Partners in Education program in collaboration with the Office of Cultural Affairs awarded eighth-grader Stella Sexton a certificate and framed artwork at Jefferson STEAM Middle School on April 3. The city also provided a ($500) honorarium to her school to support art supplies.  COMO Magazine
  • At Missouri FFA's 98th Convention, members competed in contests & connected with alumni to learn about the future of agriculture.  Columbia Missourian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Columbia’s Historic Preservation Commission is finalizing details of its first preservation plan for City Council review. The plan will guide efforts to protect local historic sites.  Columbia Missourian
  • Columbia will launch a new downtown safety ambassador program on May 19, training six local volunteers to help monitor nightlife — the $500,000 initiative provides a direct line to police for public safety support.  KRCG
  • The City of Columbia’s Office of Sustainability will launch a heat resilience project in the White Gate area this June to address limited cooling options + residents will join initial events to help plan local solutions.  KOMU 8
  • U.S. 63 northbound ramps at Grindstone Parkway will close on Monday, Apr. 20 for construction of a new loop on- and off-ramp; East New Haven Road and part of Lemone Industrial Blvd are closed until work finishes end of June (weather permitting).  KOMU 8
