COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On July 3, 2023, Rev. Daniel Hilty began his first day at the church in Columbia and learned that a candle fire had activated sprinklers in the modern Christian Life Center, causing water damage—though the historic sanctuary was unharmed. After 19 months of repairs that led to a grand reopening on February 2, the church restored its programs like pickleball and ministry services and now plans to install a new elevator—enhancing its facilities for the community.  COMO Magazine

CRIME NEWS

  • Police were already on scene when gunfire erupted at Cosmo Park on Saturday during a party of more than 1,000 university students (from Columbia and Jefferson City), leaving two people hospitalized and prompting an investigation that included vehicle searches, evidence collection and the use of a K-9 unit with no arrests made.  ABC 17

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mareck Dance in partnership with Odyssey Chamber Music Series presents an original production of Cinderella at the Missouri Theatre tomorrow and Saturday at 7 p.m.—the show offers a modern twist with new choreography and two world premieres. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Last weekend, some CACC students attended the SkillsUSA Missouri State Conference and earned spots at the national contest in Atlanta this June. To fund their trip, CACC will host a BBQ fundraiser next Thursday, April 24, where a $10 meal—pulled pork sandwich, coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans and a chocolate chip cookie—is available for pick up at the north side of the CACC building from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.  Inside Columbia
  • The UM System Board of Curators said Thursday morning that the university is in good shape and will cut spending by limiting hires—tightening purchasing controls and freezing capital and lease spending—to protect research funding. UM System President Mun Choi said the school will raise tuition modestly and is exploring alternative funds while urging lawmakers to help keep NIH support flowing.  KOMU 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe won a second term on April 8 by taking 25 of 32 precincts with 14,111 votes while Blair Murphy received 10,676 votes. The record election saw 25,606 ballots cast— the highest total in a mayoral race since 1998— and marked an eight-precinct improvement over 2022.  ABC 17
  • The University of Missouri Board of Curators met at 8 a.m. Thursday at Missouri S&T in Rolla to review a fiscal year 2026 budget update that could lead to a $22 million loss of NIH grants— they also discussed changes to hazing policies, an MU Health Care expansion in Callaway County costing $23.8 million, and $5 million in capital projects.  ABC 17
