ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Boone County fire crews are battling a natural cover fire north of Columbia off U.S. 63 on North Highway VV that is threatening a residential area today—officials say further updates are forthcoming. KOMU 8
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Columbia man, Arthur W. Hooks (70), was charged on Monday morning with First Degree Assault, Armed Criminal Action, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon after a victim said Hooks stabbed him in the arm when caught stealing a wooden chest. KRCG
- ➤ City leaders spoke out after three shootings over the weekend that injured five people, and police arrested Michael Whited after a 10-hour standoff on Friday along with 20-year-old Jadon Gooldy in connection with a Friday night shooting on Maguire Boulevard — the charges include multiple counts of assault and armed criminal action. The Columbia School Board elected John Lyman as president on Monday night, and a 72-year-old man from Holts Summit faces an assault charge after he sustained a head graze during a fatal shooting on Sunday. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Missouri said on Tuesday that some international students had their visas revoked—details on the number and countries were not shared. The university added that it is helping affected students while they get legal advice. Columbia Daily Tribune
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Boone County Fire Protection District answered 419 calls in March with 159 fire-related incidents, 105 more than in February (54 calls) and 66 higher than last March. Extreme wildfire danger forced evacuations near Hartsburg on March 14 (due to wildfires). ABC 17
- ➤ Governor Mike Kehoe appointed four new members to the Missouri Board of Education this week, replacing board president Charlie Shields and vice president Carol Hallquist while keeping Springfield eye surgeon Tom Prater on the board. The new members will serve staggered eight-year terms and work with Commissioner Karla Eslinger to guide public education. Columbia Daily Tribune
- ➤ A special meeting on Thursday at 5 p.m. will feature the swearing-in of newly reelected Mayor Barbara Buffaloe along with City Council members Jacque Sample and Nick Foster, who will represent the Third and Fourth Wards.
