COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UCP Heartland hosted the 34th annual CoMo Wing Ding today, where Dickey’s Barbecue won first place for dry rub and buffalo wings & D & D Pub & Grub and Flat Branch tied for specialty.  Columbia Missourian
  • Woodhaven will upgrade five houses for people with disabilities using a $70,000 Community Development Block Grant approved by City Council, with repairs including flooring, showers, and kitchen improvements expected to finish by the end of this year (all work must be complete by March 31, 2027).  KOMU 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • ABK Biomedical plans to build a manufacturing facility next to the Columbia Regional Airport at Cartwright Business Park, where it will produce technology called Eye90 Microspheres (used in liver cancer treatments undergoing clinical trials at MU Health Care) and has hired Columbia-based Coil Construction; timeline details remain pending.  KOMU 8

  • Local celebrity pairs will raise funds for Access Arts during CelebrARTy’s duos event, which runs Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Broadway Elevation Ballroom.  Columbia Missourian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Missouri State Board of Education approved Frontier STEM Academy – Elementary as Boone County’s first charter school Tuesday morning in Columbia. Columbia Public Schools warned the new school could draw public funds and affect local enrollment.  KRCG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Columbia Housing Authority celebrates 70 years of service, having supported over 2,000 households and 4,000 people since 1956.  Columbia Missourian

HEALTH NEWS

  • Boone Health withdrew its request for a restraining order against Missouri Heart Center after both sides began negotiations. The health system will shift cardiology care on May 6 when Missouri Heart Center stops service, and Boone Health will open its own clinic + arrange primary care coverage to avoid gaps.  KOMU 8
  • A University of Missouri physician found a machine learning model predicted heart risks more accurately than traditional methods using cardiac PET scan data—further research and FDA review are needed before it can be used in clinical settings.  KOMU 8
  • Boone Health will offer free health screenings on Saturday, April 18 from 8 a.m. to noon at Boone Health Nifong Medical Plaza; some services require a provider’s order, and residents can register by calling (573-815-8150).  KOMU 8
