COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Broadway Christian Church hosted its largest annual garage sale — a long-time fundraising tradition — to support Habitat for Humanity. Volunteers lined up outside the church as organizers expect to beat last year's $40,000 in donations. KOMU 8
- ➤ ForColumbia + Woodhaven are joining through Love Your Block grants to beautify nearly 35 northeast Columbia homes and upgrade Woodhaven's Day Center on April 25. The project will involve about 200 volunteers to repair, plant, and build a greenhouse. KOMU 8
- ➤ Columbia awarded 10 Love Your Block grants today to support park renovations & neighborhood beautification. The grants, chosen from 23 applications, empower local residents & groups to improve public spaces in central Columbia. Columbia Daily Tribune
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Students took part in the Red Bull Chariot Race downtown today, where 24 teams built themed chariots and raced on a dynamic course featuring puzzles and rider swaps. The event also featured a live motorsport performance and free samples of Red Bull’s new spring beverage flavors. KRCG
- ➤ The Sager Reeves Gallery is hosting Norman Rockwell’s illustrations from 'Huckleberry Finn' until May 30 (highlighting Missouri’s rich history) as part of the Fair Missouri exhibit. Columbia Missourian
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Kayleigh Wiecken, an 18-year-old YouthBuild graduate, was recognized by Job Point — awarding her three AmeriCorps Education awards, a HiSET diploma, and certification as a peer specialist — for her work and leadership. She plans to attend school to become an automotive mechanic and gain independence. KOMU 8
- ➤ Columbia Public Schools posted its search for a new chief equity officer Friday after Carla London—first hired in 2017—left the role+ the new hire will start immediately to advance district equity programs. KOMU 8
- ➤ UM System President Mun Choi said the university cut funding for multicultural student organizations on Apr. 3 — groups will be reclassified in July with new funding limits; students attended a town hall on Apr. 6 to learn more. KOMU 8
- ➤ Following the recent election and board reorganization, the Columbia school board will vote Monday on an updated teacher contract that provides a $1,400 base pay raise, a contracted work day, and a revised 2026—27 school calendar with a teacher collaboration day on Aug. 17.
