COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Home gardeners can join the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri’s Garden Giving initiative by donating extra produce to hunger relief organizations through the Fresh Food Connect app (which simplifies locating nearby drop-off sites). The program aims to reduce food waste and improve access to fresh fruits and vegetables for neighbors.  KRCG
  • True North of Columbia announced last week that it added Curtis Varns and Blair Murphy as board members to boost its support for local families. Varns (general manager of the Networks of Mid-Missouri, including KMIZ and FOX 22) and Murphy (owner of Johnson Paint and Decorating) bring strong business experience.  Inside Columbia
  • Columbia announced Love Your Block mini-grant winners today, selecting 10 neighborhood projects to enhance public spaces. The grants will fund park restoration, community cleanups, and art initiatives at sites such as Again Street Park (invasive species removal) in central Columbia.  KOMU 8

  • Villageco.work, Columbia’s first social work club for freelancers and remote workers, will open April 14 at 110 Orr St. in the North Village Arts District with an open house from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.—featuring high-speed Wi-Fi, private phone booths, and meeting spaces.  Columbia Daily Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southern Boone voters approved a $4 million no-tax-increase bond issue in Tuesday's municipal election to fund repairs, parking lot improvements, roof repairs and HVAC upgrades for school facilities. Parking lot repairs may begin this summer as the district funds needed maintenance without raising current tax rates.  KOMU 8
  • Incumbents April Ferrao, John Lyman and Paul Harper were reelected to the Columbia School Board in Tuesday’s municipal elections, defeating challenger Keary Husain. They will serve three-year unpaid terms to set policy for Columbia Public Schools.  KOMU 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Parks and Recreation Commission recommended the COLT Trail project to City Council today, and the $3 million plan will convert unused railroad sections along Paris Road – providing a community trail – if approved.  Columbia Missourian
