Good morning, Columbia. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 7th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On April 6th, the grand opening of The Market at Serendipity marked the debut of a new farmer and art market in downtown Columbia that took over after the final Orr Street Market season in 2024. Owner Elizabeth Jordheim said the market is designed for walkers and bikers and will run Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. until December 14.  KOMU 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The State Emergency Management Agency released Missouri Task Force 1 from its flood rescue mission this morning after the team rescued a woman at her home and saved two men trapped in a vehicle from rising floodwaters. The 48-member team—after finishing its work in Southeast Missouri—left from its Poplar Bluff base on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and will reach Boone County at 4 p.m.  KOMU 8
  • MoDOT has announced a waiver that lets trucks haul up to 10% more weight for carrying rock, sand and gravel to support flood relief and repair levees and other public infrastructure — the waiver will last until May 5th. Drivers must follow posted bridge weight limits and slow to 30 mph when crossing bridges on non-interstate roads.  KOMU 8
  • After several days of flooding rescue missions in southeastern Missouri, Missouri Task Force 1's 48 members and two K-9 units returned home.  Columbia Missourian
  • Missouri Task Force 1 returned safely to Columbia Sunday after a four-day deployment to help areas affected by rising floodwaters and hazardous weather, arriving at Boone County Fire Protection District Headquarters around 2:30 p.m. with grateful family members welcoming them—this was their first in-state deployment since 2019. The team conducted water rescues by assisting a woman stranded in her flooded home around 9:30 p.m. Saturday and by rescuing two men trapped in a pickup truck early Sunday morning.  ABC 17

HEALTH NEWS

  • Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and MU Health Care did not reach a new agreement before the contract expired on March 31, leaving more than 90,000 patients across Mid Missouri without in network care. Some patients can still get treatment at regular rates under a temporary continuity plan—both groups continue to trade blame as negotiations remain underway.  KOMU 8
  • Dr. Adam Wheeler of Big Tree Medical in Columbia said his clinic uses a membership model — with an $80 monthly fee and full primary care services — that offers an alternative to insurance-funded care. Local patients have shown increased interest since a recent fallout left over 90,000 people out-of-network from traditional providers.  KOMU 8
