COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Brad and Brenda Harriman were on vacation when an EF-2 tornado hit Pilot Grove and damaged their property. After they posted for help on social media, 25 to 30 local volunteers came together to help clear the debris.  KOMU 8
  • OATS Transit received a $10,000 grant from Veterans United Foundation to give veterans free rides across 15 mid–Missouri counties. The nonprofit will use the funds to help veterans reach Truman Veterans' Hospital and nearby VA clinics.  KOMU 8

CRIME NEWS

  • Crockett, charged with first-degree murder in the 2023 shooting on Dove Drive that killed Deshon Houston, had his third plea hearing on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Boone County Courthouse (with Judge Brouck Jacobs) after two previous hearings were delayed due to a phone outage and his attorney needing more time to review a potential deal.  ABC 17

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Army Ants, a Columbia high school robotics team, qualified for the FIRST Championship after winning the Impact Award at a Minneapolis competition on Sunday— they will compete in Houston from April 16 to 19 and need to raise $6,000 for their trip.  KOMU 8
  • Southern Boone County R-I School District named Lindsey Hammann as the new assistant principal of Southern Boone Middle School. She will begin on July 1 and brings 15 years of education experience—including 3 years teaching kindergarten—to support student growth.  KOMU 8
