CRIME NEWS

  • On Monday, Pettis County deputies searched 19532 Matlsbarger Road in Sedalia and arrested six people—evidence included fentanyl, methamphetamine, a firearm, and drug paraphernalia. Samantha Batzel, Justin Schoen and four others were charged with drug offenses—this marked the third warrant executed at the property in 18 months.  KRCG
  • Human remains were found Saturday at Rocky Fork Lakes Conservation Area in Boone County and were taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office for identification—the Boone County Sheriff’s Office and MSHP Division of Drug and Crime Control are investigating the scene.  ABC 17
  • A Columbia teenager, 16-year-old Samiyon Myers, was charged as an adult in Boone County for allegedly shooting at a vehicle near the Columbia Mall on January 19—he faces seven felony charges including first-degree attempted assault and armed criminal action—he is now held without bond.  KOMU 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • A film festival dedicated to environmental activism will take place at The Blue Note on Sunday from 1-4 p.m.—the largest annual fundraiser for the South Yuba River Citizens League that supports efforts to protect the Yuba River Watershed. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Proposed federal cuts to Medicaid and SNAP could create a $2 billion gap in Missouri’s budget and result in over 20,000 jobs lost, with rural areas facing the hardest hit—lawmakers may need to raise taxes or cut other spending if these measures take effect.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • State Sen. Stephen Webber accused powerful people in the Capitol of protecting sexual predators after an amendment to open records of sexual assaults was defeated—he said he could not name anyone because he promised confidentiality to victims.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • Sen. Blaine Luetkemeyer—retired congressman from St. Elizabeth—was confirmed by the Missouri Senate to join the UM System Board of Curators after the governor tapped him in early March, and his work in Congress helped secure $20 million for the NextGen MU Research Reactor.  KOMU 8
