ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 45-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman from Centralia were injured early Tuesday when a UTV crossed the road and flipped near the Audrain and Boone County line; they were taken to University Hospital with the man seriously hurt and the woman moderately hurt, and neither wore a helmet or seatbelt. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On March 18 at 12:40 p.m., Columbia police responded to a vandalism call in the 4700 block of Silver Salmon Way when a gun was fired—18-year-old Elijah Anthony Butler was arrested on March 19 and booked into Boone County Jail without bond on charges including First-Degree Stalking, First-Degree Property Damage and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. - ➤ Columbia man Lance A. Sappington, 42, was arrested on March 18 after a SWAT search at a home on Elm Grove Drive found drugs and smoking pipes that tested positive for methamphetamine along with 10 illegal firearms; he faces multiple felony charges. KRCG
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday, dozens of Missourians, including children, gathered at the corner of Broadway and Providence Street in Columbia to protest federal plans to cut the Department of Education and school programs. CMNEA President Noelle Gilzow said the cuts would affect reduced lunches, Title IX protections and other services, and she urged citizens to contact their state representatives. KRCG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Columbia city leaders created the Office of Violence Prevention to lower violent crimes and boost public safety—D’Markus Thomas-Brown, a local with strong community ties, is its first Administrator. He will begin his role on March 31 with an initial $500,000 budget to work with law enforcement and community organizations. KRCG
- ➤ Columbia Public Works hosted a third Ash Street meeting at the Activity and Recreation Center on Wednesday, where residents raised concerns about the loss of old trees and yard space—and urged safer traffic measures. Director Shane Creech said the team will review feedback for a May or June council report—and any changes could alter the design and delay construction planned between summer 2026 and spring 2027. - ➤ Columbia Public Works will reconstruct the sidewalk in front of Tiger Barber Shop next week starting Monday at 7 a.m.—the project will close part of South Ninth Street between Cherry and Locust and is scheduled to finish with the sidewalk reopening by 5 p.m. March 26, weather permitting. KOMU 8
