COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Center Project helps Columbia residents update their wardrobes through its community closet. Officials say that completely overhauling a wardrobe is too expensive for many, so the program offers affordable clothing options.  Columbia Missourian
  • Columbia will invest over $1 million to renovate playgrounds and add accessible features for people with disabilities, with work set to begin soon. The projects are part of the city's commitment to inclusive community spaces + ensuring equal play opportunities.  Columbia Missourian
  • The Special Olympics held its annual polar plunge at Stephens Lake Park in Columbia, where over 200 participants raised more than $50,000 to support local programs for people with intellectual disabilities—funding that remains in Missouri. Fundraising started last October.  KOMU 8
  • Columbia hosted its second annual Community Summit Saturday at the Daniel Boone City Building from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Residents shared their concerns and ideas with city leaders at interactive booths — a follow-up sparked by strong community input last year.  KOMU 8
  • Breakthru Beverage Missouri and Jameson Irish Whiskey will offer 500 free Lyft rides to Columbia residents on St. Patrick's Day after 10 a.m. Residents can claim up to $30 using code BBGSTPAT26 starting at 8 a.m. on Mar. 17.  KOMU 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Stephens College welcomed its new president Shannon Lundeen yesterday at the school’s equestrian center, where she was sworn in and outlined a future-focused leadership while honoring tradition. Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe proclaimed March 14 as Shannon B. Lundeen Day in the city.  KOMU 8

  • Columbia hosted a Community Summit where residents shared priorities to guide city planning, services, and budgeting decisions. City officials will use the feedback to shape future policy.  Columbia Missourian
  • Drivers in Columbia should plan for road closures starting Monday. New Haven Road will shut at 7 a.m. for 300 days east of the U.S. 63 ramps, while South Smith Hatchery Road has tree removal until Friday, Mar. 27, and Conley Road will close for 60 days starting Mar. 23.  ABC 17
  • The City Council will review a proposed contract with American Airlines to add daily flights to Charlotte at Columbia Regional Airport.  Columbia Missourian
