COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbia announced four office hour sessions to discuss the Love Your Block mini-grant program sponsored by Bloomberg Center. The first meeting is today from 10 a.m. to noon at Hanover Village Community Center with sessions on Feb. 28, March 7, and March 14 — applications close March 15.  KOMU 8
  • Turning Point is opening its emergency overnight warming center this weekend, scheduled Friday through Monday nights, to offer showers, restrooms and donated items for people experiencing homelessness at Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church (702 Wilkes Blvd., Suite 301).  KOMU 8
  • GQT Forum 8 will host a free screening of The Psychology of Retirement for adults 50 & older, with limited seating and required reservations.  Columbia Missourian

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local families Jen and Lee Miller and Curt and Heather Carleton now own Pierpont General Store in Columbia. They plan to run the store and serve community needs with fresh energy.  Columbia Missourian
  • Steep & Bloom Tea has moved into a larger space at Serendipity Salon & Art Gallery to add tea blends, workshops and private tea parties after a year of growth. A free graduation ceremony runs from 10 a.m. to noon on Feb. 28 at The Shops at Sharp End.  KOMU 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Columbia artist Madeline LeMieux is leading a painting class with Mizzou students to create a new mural on the Arts and Sciences Building — a project that brings campus art to life.  Columbia Missourian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Firefighters honed EMT and paramedic skills last Friday at the Training Academy as part of a new six-week pilot program aimed at expanding their dual roles. The program will add a dedicated paramedic at Stations 2 + 5 and begin March 1 to enhance on-scene care.  KOMU 8
  • MoDOT will close a segment of I-70 Drive Southeast near Woodridge Drive to Glenstone Drive beginning March 9 for about 300 days to build a new underpass and two bridges. Businesses stay open while motorists use Keene Street and St. Charles Road (reopening planned for December).  KOMU 8
  • Due to rising spring temperatures, street potholes in Columbia have increased and residents are urged to submit reports online for timely repairs. The city monitors reports to help prioritize maintenance.  Columbia Missourian
  • Interstate 70 will be reduced to one lane in both directions at mile marker 148 in Kingdom City next week — Tuesday to Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.— for bridge work as part of the Improve I-70 project, and officials urge drivers to slow down in work zones.  KOMU 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • MU Health Care invites visitors to the Columbia Activity and Recreation Center for free heart screenings, blood pressure checks, and AFIB tests today from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Experts will offer advice on healthy eating and exercise.  ABC 17
  • KFC on Clark Lane may be fined after a Monday inspection found employees stacking pans and trays improperly and not cleaning them well. A Thursday reinspection showed drying now met standards, but cleaning issues remain, and officials require corrections by Tuesday (health inspectors cautioned).  ABC 17
  • Risus (Columbia’s first dental bank) has launched a new service to connect patients with local dental professionals. The service aims to streamline dental care access for residents.  Columbia Missourian

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Catch-and-keep trout season starts this March at selected trout parks while local lakes offer nontrout recreational fishing. Anglers should check park regulations before heading out.  Columbia Missourian
