COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbia Parks and Recreation has proposed railbanking a 2.5-mile stretch of tracks on Rogers Street-Brown Station Road and enhancing Field Park and Northeast Regional Park. Public input for Field Park is Feb. 18, 4-6 p.m. at the Armory Sports and Recreation Center, and Northeast Regional Park meeting is March 12.  KOMU 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rural internet service provider Spectrum announced Thursday it is expanding its fiber broadband network in Boone County so over 1,100 unserved or underserved homes and businesses receive gigabit-speed internet, mobile, TV + voice services. The rollout is part of a multi-year $7 billion project to close the digital divide.  KOMU 8
  • The Old Neighborhood Cafe near Cherry Hill announced it will close on Feb. 28; mother — son duo Vanessa and Jake Leitza invite locals to enjoy one final meal this month.  Inside Columbia

CRIME NEWS

  • A Columbia man deported to the Netherlands claimed he endured overcrowded, unsanitary conditions and excessive force at Camp East Montana in El Paso, where a detainee died in January amid a call for further review.  ABC 17

CULTURE NEWS

  • Columbia’s Holocaust exhibit features Hickman performing The Diary of Anne Frank to show American responsibility in facing world tragedies (a reminder of history’s lessons). Local visitors are encouraged to reflect on the impact of past events on today.  Columbia Missourian
  • Longtime art supporter Kenny Greene -- known for teaching tai chi and owning Monarch Jewelry in North Village -- died Dec. 28, 2025; his friend John Gage is honoring his legacy by leading the CoMo Taiji nonprofit.  KOMU 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents raise concerns over a 45% tuition hike at the Columbia Child Development Center for children with disabilities as new rates begin April 1, 2026 and rise further on Jan. 1, 2027. UCP Heartland cited low enrollment and rising costs (families report unclear scholarship details) as reasons for the increase.  ABC 17
  • Students at Southern Boone County High School are raising funds in a class competition to replace an aging playground as donations continue until Saturday and the winner is announced today at the Courtwarming basketball game, with freshmen currently leading the contest with $1,105 raised.  KRCG

HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC reported Missouri had high flu activity with nearly 9,000 cases by early January. Local health officials advise residents to get a flu shot and wash hands often to help stop the flu.  KRCG

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mizzou Athletics is seeking a regional partner to buy the naming rights to Memorial Stadium to boost revenue. The athletic department expects a deal lasting from ten to fifteen years at a low+mid seven figure amount and will honor veterans with a commemorative program.  KOMU 8
  • Columbia will host public events during June and July as a FIFA World Cup satellite to support Kansas City, including watch parties, soccer lessons, and creative art projects. A new law allowing bars to serve alcohol nearly around the clock awaits discussion by the City Council in March.  KOMU 8
