CULTURE NEWS

  • The term 'jellying' originated in student life at the University of Missouri and Stephens College to mean meeting at soda shops, a trend that peaked in the late 1930s to early 1940s and faded by the 1950s in Columbia (historical records confirm this usage).  KRCG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Columbia Public Schools announced Mitchell Pittman as principal at Beulah Ralph Elementary and John Higgins as director for the Columbia Area Career Center for the 2026-2027 school year.  KOMU 8
  • Two Mile Prairie Elementary will use a lottery for kindergarten and select first-grade seats starting in the 2026-27 school year, with the application window opening on March 12. Students in the school boundary do not need to join the lottery.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The West Old Plank Road exit at the Route K roundabout reopens Friday, completing Phase 4 that restored all driving lanes. Sidewalk work, grading restoration and streetlight installation will continue in the spring.  ABC 17

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tiger Nutrition launches a Valentine’s Day menu with limited-time specials, offering shakes and fruity teas — customers can choose Cupid’s Tea Boxes for group treats.  Inside Columbia
  • The University of Missouri School of Medicine enrolled its first patient in a clinical trial using Eye90 microspheres to treat liver tumors on Monday at MU Health Care. Researchers partnered with ABK Biomedical and used the on-site research reactor — a new step in targeted radiotherapy.  KOMU 8
  • Serendipity Salon & Gallery will host a couples massage class on Valentine's Day from 6:30 to 9 p.m. where participants learn relaxation techniques and enjoy a gallery sale with permanent jewelry, flowers, charcuterie, hot tea, and bar drinks while tickets cost $150 per couple.  Inside Columbia
