- ➤ Residents in Thornbrook Subdivision paid tribute to 63-year-old Marcia Lyon (a longtime mail carrier) by hanging purple ribbons on mailboxes. Neighbors raised nearly $7,000 to help with funeral expenses after she died on Jan. 27 at the Perkins Home Residential Care Center. KRCG

- ➤ Farmers are testing GPS-enabled collars managed via a mobile app as part of a Mizzou project aiming to ease livestock tracking and improve rotational grazing. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Columbia School Board approved an updated weapons policy Monday, Feb. 9 that clarifies the list of prohibited items and strict consequences for students bringing any weapon to school (including pepper spray, stun guns, and modified toy guns) as required by state law. KOMU 8
- ➤ The Missouri House approved a bill on Monday to require public schools to screen all students for gifted education by third grade. The measure, which could identify around 20,000 students + give schools flexibility, now heads to the Senate as funding adjustments are considered. KRCG
- ➤ Eight Boone County students were named winners of the 2026 Earth Day Art Contest, with two winners in each age group from kindergarten through 12th grade; the contest, a collaboration between Columbia, Boone County, and the University of Missouri (promoting environmental education), awarded prizes via mail or schools. - ➤ Missouri’s plan to include a grade-level equivalency score on state tests may be delayed as Gov. Mike Kehoe’s budget cuts omit the ($1 million) needed for the measure. Lawmakers may restore funding later if state law requires it. Columbia Daily Tribune

- ➤ Starting Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 7 a.m., parts of downtown will close for a week as Gerlach Construction replaces a roof at Brookside Downtown (219 S. Ninth St.) for equipment staging. City officials say roads and sidewalks should reopen by 5 p.m. Feb. 18, weather permitting. Columbia Daily Tribune
- ➤ Starting Monday, Feb. 23, the Tanner Bridge Road bridge over the Moreau River between Friendship Road and Route B will close for realignment as Cole County Public Works awarded a $2.1M contract to Don Schnieders Excavating — work is set to finish by November. ABC 17
- ➤ Columbia’s Office of Violence Prevention is partnering with the police and NICJR on a 24-month project to analyze gun violence data — the analysis will take four to six months, with meetings set for Wednesday and March 5 to kick off data collection. KOMU 8
- ➤ The Missouri Department of Transportation announced that a bridge on I-70 in Montgomery County will be replaced with a wider structure and a new interchange layout on Wednesday, Feb. 18. Traffic will be impacted with detours and lane reductions starting at 8 a.m. Feb. 23. ABC 17
