COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbia will accept Love Your Block applications starting Feb. 14 and close submissions on March 15. Winners will be announced in early April—offering residents a chance to beautify their neighborhoods.  Columbia Missourian

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A cow that fell into an icy pond in Perche Township yesterday afternoon was rescued by Boone County crews after more than an hour of careful work — veterinarians from MU checked its condition.  KOMU 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Columbia Public Library will host the traveling exhibit Americans and the Holocaust from Feb. 9 to March 16; the exhibit examines American responses to Nazism using interactive panels and events (including a talk by survivor Erika Schwartz and a Mizzou Hillel program) to highlight historical perspectives.  Columbia Daily Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Missouri lawmakers introduced a bill on Feb. 4 that would limit elementary screen time to 45 minutes and require 70% of assignments to be handwritten with cursive instruction. The House Education Committee discussed the proposal, which has special education exceptions (for assistive technology), but took no immediate action.  Columbia Daily Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction crews will begin replacing the roof of Brookside Downtown at 219 South Ninth St. at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, causing South Tenth and Locust streets with sidewalks to be closed until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18 — detour and no parking signs will be posted beforehand.  ABC 17
  • Columbia is holding two public open houses to get input on a proposal to railbank the 2.5-mile section of COLT Railroad from Rogers Street to East Brown Station Road at the Daniel Boone City Building; meetings run Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.  KOMU 8
  • Columbia will close the CoMo to Zero survey on Feb. 13 so residents can share travel and safety concerns; a public update meeting (4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Activity and Recreation Center) will discuss the new safety plan based on the feedback.  KOMU 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • MU Health Care will expand outpatient care at its Keene Street campus after the UM System Board of Curators approved an $83 million overhaul Thursday + a 10-year plan will shift lower-acuity procedures from University Hospital while current services continue.  KOMU 8
  • Planned Parenthood Great Plains is offering free vasectomies at its Columbia location to promote men’s reproductive health care. The traveling event brings a new preventive service to the community.  Columbia Missourian
