COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbia’s Parks and Recreation Department will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. candlelight walk and memorial celebration on Monday. Participants will meet in the Armory Sports Center basement at 6:30 p.m. and gather at St. Luke United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. to honor Dr. King’s legacy.  KOMU 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Missouri lawmakers are considering proposals to boost public school gifted education. One plan would require screening all students before third grade while another would raise funding by 60 percent per student after a Jan. 15 Education Committee meeting.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • Mid-Missouri students in grades K-6 competed in the free Block Kids Building Competition on Saturday hosted by the Central Missouri NAWIC, where they had one hour to use a rock, twine, tinfoil and Legos to build imaginative creations — a tradition that sparks interest in construction careers.  KOMU 8

  • The City of Columbia will host its monthly Let's Talk Local meeting on Jan. 25 at the Columbia Public Library Friends Room to discuss building stronger neighborhoods with Councilperson Valerie Carroll and city staff answering questions. Registration details are available online.  KOMU 8
